Before you start drooling over the pictures and plan to buy this car, do understand that this is a one-off vehicle, made by a Mercedes engineer named Jürgen Eberle. The project in talks here is a one-off Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain 4×4² inspired by the equally extreme G500 4×4², and based on the Mercedes E-Class All-Terrain.

What Eberle did is install portal axles and monstrous tyres to create the E-Class All-Terrain 4×4² and it’s pure madness. It took a few months to create the car and lot and lot of people got associated with the new vehicle, seeing its potential. The E-Class All-Terrain has more than double the original car’s ground clearance: 420mm, which is 160mm in the standard car.

The new off-roader also has a wading depth of 500 mm, just 100 mm shy of the G-Class’s 600mm. Just so you know, the standard All-Terrain’s wading depth is 280mm. Another notable aspect of the All-Terrain are the 20 in wheels, which come from the R-Class and are shod in knobbly 285/50 R20 off-roading tyres.

The massive ground clearance also results in approach and departure angles of 35.8 and 35.6 degrees, respectively, and a breakover angle of 31.7 degrees. On top of that, the massive wagon concept can wade nearly 20 inches of water. These figures are stellar even among the most hard core off-road vehicles.

To house these massive tyres, special wheel arch extenders were made using 3D printing and attached to the car, increasing its width by almost 200mm. “The crucial factor was the network,” said Eberle. “In every area where I needed support, I found colleagues who were on the same wavelength and who provided help quickly and without any red tape.”

The All-Terrain is powered by the same unit from the standard E-Class sedan – a 191bhp four-cylinder diesel engine mated with 9G-tronic nine-speed automatic gearbox. Mercedes’ 4Matic all-wheel drive system is also standard in the model.

The E-Class All-Terrain 4×4² got the attention of the E-Class’s chief engineer, Michael Kelz, who said: “The idea excited me right from the start and initial test drives of the All-Terrain 4×4 2 at the new testing and technology centre in Immendingen are demonstrating promising off-road characteristics. Thanks to the suspension lift with portal axles, the All-Terrain 4×4 2 is able to cope with even the nastiest rocky and stony runs – it’s a really skillful scrambler.”

As of now, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain 4×4² is just a concept, and we think Mercedes-Benz won’t make it official as there’s no market for such a vehicle. But then, Mercedes-Benz does have a reputation for pulling off bonkers stuff and they have pushed off-the wall off-roaders into production in the past.

We can just sit and watch if this vehicle goes into production as it would be interetsing to see such a car on the road. Mercedes’ G500 4×4² and the G63 6*6 are a coupe of such example and we have seen what the vehicle can do and the E-Class All-Terrain 4×4² can follow the lines.
