BMW created quite a uproar in the market by adding the ‘M’ badge to the X5 and X6 SUVs. It was for the first time any manufacturer thought of mainstreaming the performance SUVs. Surely Mercedes has done the same with its G63 AMG SUV, but the X5 is more convinient for those who want a everyday SUV and they now get a ‘M’ badge with it.

BMW has moved a inch further now and unveiled the new Black Fire Edition of the BMW X5 M and the BMW X6 M SUVs. The Black Fire Edition of the SUVs is the visual upgrade only and is designed to with exclusive furnishing details for both exterior and interior. The SUVs get a shade of black in the Sapphire Black Metallic as a paintjob.

The BMW signature kidney grille and gets a black M double kidney with black bars which is a unique feature of the Black Fire Edition. The shade is also applied to the forged 21-inch M alloy wheels in black shodded in 10 J x 21 tyres in front and 11.5 J x 21 in rear, to optimize the weight. Another distinguishing feature of the Black Fire Edition are the standard carbon mirror caps, which accentuate the lightweight design of both models.

Inside the cabin of the BMW X5 M Edition Black Fire and BMW X6 M Edition Black Fire is a fully-electric M multifunctional seats with integrated headrests as standard. The seats are made of full fine-grain Merino leather, in contrasting Black and Mugello Red. The seats also features contrasting red seams on the full leather upholstery, which also includes the central console.

The centre console gets a piano finish black, while X5 M or X6 M Edition Black Fire logo adorns the right side of the interior trim on the passenger side of the car. Also standard is the multifunctional M leather steering wheel with aluminium shift paddles. You can also opt for BMW M Performance Alcantara steering wheel with light-blue leather motorsport accent at no extra charge.

Beneath the hood of both the models is 4.4-litre V8 engine with 575 hp output and is mated to a standard 8-speed M Steptronic gearbox. The maximum torque of 750 Nm between 2200 and 5000 rpm pushes both the cars from 0 to 100 kmph in just 4.2 seconds. The xDrive four-wheel drive system is more inclined towards the rear-wheel, improving the agility of the BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M.

Both the SUVs get a Dynamic Performance Control system which distributes the drive torque between the rear wheels. The Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) allows driver to enhace the sporty character of the BMW X5 M or BMW X6 M. With the “DSC on” mode, the brake works to prevent understeer and oversteer. Deactivating DSC (“DSC off”) makes it easier to test the limits on the racetrack, and drift the cars around the corner.

The new special editions will be available starting in August 2017. Prices of the both the models are not yet revealed.
